Scrubs to Suds: Finding Balance and Purpose Beyond Medicine

As I sit down to reflect on my journey from the world of medicine to the realm of automotive detailing, the phrase “Scrubs to Suds” couldn’t feel more fitting. My transition from pursuing a career in neurology to owning and operating Flatirons Detailing has been a transformational journey - one that has not only allowed me to pursue my passion for precision and attention to detail, but has also provided me with a newfound sense of balance and fulfillment. 

My journey into medicine began with a deep-seated desire to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. From the moment I stepped into the lecture halls of CU Boulder, I was captivated by the complexities of the human body and the endless potential for healing and scientific discovery. However, as time passed and I received my Masters in Public Health, I found myself yearning for change - a shift toward a more hands-on, tangible form of expression for my scientific background. The transition from a world of constant didactic memorization, clinic days, and research in the neurology lab at Anschutz to the dynamic realm of mobile detailing was undoubtedly a shift in pace. Yet, it was a transition that allowed my mind to gently slow down, trading the confines of a clinical setting for the open roads of business ownership and entrepreneurship, where every vehicle becomes a canvas for meticulous craftsmanship. It was during this time of introspection that I discovered my love for automotive detailing. 

The transition from medicine to detailing was not without its challenges. The change in pace, as mentioned, was palpable, and I had to learn to navigate the intricacies of running a business while remaining true to myself, and my commitment to excellence. With each passing day, I found myself falling more deeply in love with the work, relishing in the limitless potential to apply my skills in new and unexpected ways. Many asked along the way and still do to this day, “Why the sudden drop of medicine? Did something happen to you?” Certainly - what has changed is my perspective on the many passions I hold, and how I am able to apply them in several facets of my life. That is, I began to realize a sense of balance and fulfillment that had long eluded me in my medical studies. 

One aspect of our business that has been particularly rewarding for me is our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. Drawing on my advanced knowledge of biochemistry and organic chemistry, I set out to develop products that were not only immensely effective but also eco-friendly and sustainable. From water-based cleaning agents with UV protectants to no-sling tire conditioners, we have made it our mission to minimize our environment footprint while maximizing the quality of our services. What began as an initiate to reduce our impact on the planet has since evolved into something much larger. Today, our sustainable detailing products are not only used within our business, but are in the midst of being patented and are scheduled to be available for purchase in 2025, allowing customers and clients alike to bring a piece of our commitment to excellence home with them.

Another tremendously rewarding aspect of our work at Flatirons Detailing is the opportunity to connect with our clients on a personal level. When we arrive at a client’s home for a detail, we are not just there to clean their vehicle - we are there to listen to their story, to understand the story of their vehicle, and to be an immediate & genuine source of trust and reliability. Every vehicle we encounter has a unique history, often intertwined with the memories and experiences of it’s owner. Whether it’s a classic car that has been passed down through generations, or the latest supercar that someone spent their entire working-life to achieve, every vehicle has a story. As detailers, it’s our privilege to honor and preserve those stories through our meticulous craftsmanship.

Scrubs to Suds is not simply a catchy title - it is a testament to a transformative journey that continues to unfold. As I navigate the streets of Denver, ensuring each vehicle we touch gleams with precision, I am reminded that the pursuit of passion attention to detail, and a commitment to sustainability can coexist harmoniously, creating a narrative that goes beyond the confines of a clinic or laboratory. Perhaps more importantly, the transition from Scrubs to Suds has taught me the invaluable lesson of finding balance and purpose beyond a typical nine-to-five career. While my journey may have taken an unexpected turn, it has ultimately led me to a place where I can continue to make a meaningful impact while prioritizing my own well being - a lesson that I hope to pass on to others, both within and beyond the realm of medicine.
