Alcantara is a synthetic material designed to mimic the look and feel of natural suede leather. Alcantara, specifically, is a proprietary material composed of a blend of polyester and polyurethane fibers. These fibers are intricately woven together using advanced manufacturing techniques to create a soft, plush surface that closely resembles natural suede. 


Suede is a type of leather that is specifically characterized by its soft, napped surface. Scientifically, suede is a form of cow-hide leather that undergoes a specific cutting and finishing process to achieve its unique texture and appearance. Raw animal hides are preserved and transformed into a stable material that is resistant to decay; through tanning, splitting, buffing, sanding, and finishing, manufacturers are able to create the material that enthusiasts have come to love. Typically utilized in higher-end vehicles and exotics, suede unfortunately, tends to absorb water and other liquids more readily than alcantara, due to the natural pores that cannot be completely sealed.


Creating a Hydrophobic Barrier

To protect alcantara and suede surfaces from moisture dirt, sweat, and other contaminants, it is essential to apply a hydrophobic barrier that repels liquids and prevents them from deeply penetrating the material. Traditional surface protectants, such as silicone-based sprays or wax coatings, may provide some level of protection, but they can drastically alter the appearance and texture of the surfaces.


For a more advanced and scientifically proven solution, we recommend the use of fluoropolymer-based protectants, which utilize polytetrafluoroethylene or perfluorooctanoic acid, to create a durable and invisible barrier on the surface of the alcantara and suede. These protectants are resistant to UV radiation, which as we know in Colorado, can be tremendously damaging to both your interior and exterior surfaces. PTFE and PFOA protectants, unlike traditional coatings, do not alter the texture of the alcantara, preserving its luxurious feel and appeal.
